So...is Jim Carrey a Clone?

June 28, 202620 min read

The 1990s were a spectacular time for cinema, especially for Jim Carrey. In the span of just a few years, we saw the release of The Mask, Dumb and Dumber, Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, and The Truman Show. But in the summer of 1996, there was another theatrical release that didn’t receive nearly the attention or praise of those other movies. And no, I’m not talking about Jim Carrey’s much maligned and heavily underrated film The Cable Guy.

About a month after The Cable Guy released, the world got its first chance to see Tom Arnold’s new movie, The Stupids. This movie was based on a series of children’s books that I happened to read growing up, so naturally 13 year old Kevin had to see The Stupids when it released, even if I was a little older than the movie’s target audience. And despite what Rotten Tomatoes would have you believe, the movie did not disappoint.

The Stupids featured Tom Arnold as Stanley Stupid, and it opened with the discovery of a giant conspiracy. That morning Stanley checked his trash barrels to discover that somebody had stolen the family’s trash again. This had been going on for as long as he could remember, with their trash being stolen the same morning every week.

Key Takeaways

  • Jim Carrey received an Honorary Cesar Award in 2026, delivering a speech in French.
  • Conspiracy theories emerged suggesting Carrey was replaced by a clone or lookalike.
  • Theories were debunked; Carrey’s appearance changes were attributed to bad Botox.
  • Alexis Stone, a drag queen, fueled the conspiracy with a fake prosthetic image.
  • Carrey’s representatives confirmed his presence at the awards, dismissing the conspiracy.

While Stanley and his wife went out to investigate the trash conspiracy, the Stupid children woke up and discovered that their parents were gone. They decided for some reason that their parents had been kidnapped by a Chinese restaurant. Also, the trash conspiracy got tied into another conspiracy that had previously cost Stanley his job at the post office. He had noticed that the post office kept receiving letters that were marked “Return to sender”, but he was fired before uncovering who the mysterious Mr.

Sender was and why he was stealing all of America’s mail.

That obviously all sounds ridiculous, dare I say stupid, but the movie was actually teaching children a valuable lesson amidst all the dumb jokes, explosions (yes, really), and Tom Arnold’s rendition of the children’s song “I’m My Own Grandpa”. The hidden message of the movie was that everything is a conspiracy when you don’t understand how anything works. Unfortunately, because The Stupids was a box office bomb, it seems an entire generation failed to learn that lesson.

The Man of One Too Many Faces

On Thursday, February 26, 2026, Jim Carrey was in Paris, France to receive an Honorary Cesar Award. For anyone unaware, the Cesars are like France’s version of the Oscars, except obviously focused on French cinema instead of American. But since 1976, they have also given out the Honorary Cesar Award. It’s basically a lifetime achievement award, and it can celebrate actors, directors, and filmmakers from any country instead of just those tied to French productions.

As far as pointless and self congratulatory awards given from the film industry to itself go, this one’s a pretty big deal.

Needless to say Carrey was excited to be receiving this tremendous honour, and he was intent on making it a memorable event. To that end, he decided to give his entire acceptance speech in French. Despite having been born and raised in Canada, Carrey doesn’t actually speak fluent French.

He’s spoken French briefly in interviews in France and Quebec, but it’s not something he’s particularly good at. Luckily, he had about eight months notice that he would be receiving the award, so he had plenty of time to write and practice his speech, which he ultimately delivered in French that he described as being “almost mediocre”.

Still, it was a lovely speech. He spoke about his family’s French roots, with his father being French-Canadian, and he got to tell his girlfriend, daughter, and grandson that he loved them while on stage. In short, it was exactly what you would have expected from an awards speech. Sure, it may have been more heartfelt and serious than you would expect a speech from Carrey to be, but it was pretty standard for this kind of speech in general.

There was just one problem, something that people around the internet immediately latched onto. The man who received the award and spoke on the red carpet wasn’t Jim Carrey. It couldn’t have been. Despite being a man of a million faces, famous for manipulating and contorting his face in unusual ways, people felt that this new face was almost unrecognizable.

Which is weird, because I knew it was him as soon as I saw it. But people also noticed that his voice was deeper, his personality was different, and most importantly, his eyes were a completely different colour. The argument was basically boiled down to a single picture. Look at this picture, and tell me if it looks like Jim Carrey to you.

I thought it looked like Carrey, just that he looked terrible. But others disagreed, and it led to a whole lot of wild speculation.

The Conspiracy Theories

I’m sure none of you reading this are strangers to weird celebrity replacement theories. Avril Lavigne allegedly died decades ago and was replaced. Katy Perry is actually the adult version of Jon Benet Ramsey. There are even more recent ones like Selena Gomez dying and being replaced after some health issues she suffered, or that Kanye West didn’t say all of that racist stuff, it was just a body double.

I guess Kanye’s body double also recorded and released the song “Heil Hitler” without Kanye knowing what was going on.

Now look, body doubles are a thing that happen in the real world sometimes. We recently talked about John McAfee using body doubles when he was on the run from the law, and world leaders have been known to have body doubles take their place when the risk of assassination might be high.

Even when the stakes are low, the idea of using a body double wouldn’t be unprecedented. When Vice contributor Oobah Butler won an award for content creator of the year, he filmed himself watching the awards at home while a body double accepted the award on his behalf. That was entirely for the sake of comedy though, and it was part of a larger story of him using various doubles for different tasks.

Despite the fact that body doubles are sometimes used in the real world, all of the rumours about celebrity body doubles really need to stop. Especially when the evidence is so flimsy.

Regardless, the various different theories surrounding Carrey immediately popped up. The most common ones were that he had been killed and replaced with some sort of doppelganger, or that he was killed and replaced with a clone.

I’ll address the clone theory first, because that’s really easy to do. This theory is also a massive pet peeve of mine, because I have had to explain this across Simon’s channels at least a dozen times.

Put simply, that’s not how cloning fucking works. Thanks to bad science fiction, people think there’s some sort of magical cloning machine that can just create a fully grown adult version of whatever you’re cloning. That’s not even remotely accurate.

To start, clones aren’t grown in labs. Sure, labs are where the process begins, but the clone embryo then needs to be implanted into a host womb where it can grow. We have yet to create artificial wombs that can grow something from an embryo all the way to maturity, so you need a living host to carry the clone baby.

Of course, all of these conspiracies assume that the perpetrator is some sort of nefarious entity, probably the government, that has access to effectively infinite sums of money. As such, finding a surrogate mother to gestate the clone baby would be trivial. Even if that were the case, though, it still doesn’t address the fact that I just referred to the clone as a baby multiple times, because that’s what you’d be growing.

When you clone something, you create a baby version of that thing with identical DNA. There is no way to accelerate its growth and development so that it catches up in age to the original thing being cloned. That means that in order for this to have been a clone, Jim Carrey would have needed to have been cloned when he was an infant. The existence of that clone then would have had to have been kept secret from the entire world for the past 64 years, on the off chance that the original Carrey needed to be replaced and swapped out with the clone.

Also, the whole point of cloning something is that it has identical DNA. So if some shadowy cabal had secretly cloned Carrey and replaced the original one, that still wouldn’t explain why he allegedly looked and sounded different. The whole point of cloning something would be so they look and sound the same. Theoretically it could explain the perceived change in personality if the cloned Carrey had a dramatically different upbringing, but accusing someone of being a clone because they suddenly look different is a level of nonsensical bullshit that I can’t even begin to comprehend.

Fine, so it’s not a clone. But what if Carrey was killed and replaced by a lookalike? I guess my biggest question there would be why? Why would anyone do that? Why on Earth would the government want to silence him?

There are lots of different types of comedians. Some, like George Carlin, are extremely politically charged. Carrey wasn’t that type of comedian. He was the impersonations, funny faces, and frenetic energy kind of comedian. His material was never political, and his first foray into anything political didn’t come until the mid 2000’s when he contracted a dangerous and deadly sexually transmitted disease from Jenny McCarthy, a disease known as vaccine skepticism. As a fun side note, McCarthy also appeared in the movie The Stupids. Coincidence?

Anyway, given the stance of the current administration, Carrey’s anti-vaccine rhetoric should have made him an ally. However, he did not care for President Trump one bit. During Trump’s first term, Carrey began drawing anti-Trump political cartoons. He also made public comments condemning Trump on multiple occasions. And apparently, that is reason enough for the government to have murdered him and replaced him.

Unfortunately, that still doesn’t really make any sense. Carrey stopped making political cartoons in 2020, and he’s mostly stayed out of the spotlight, spending more time enjoying a quiet life. During an interview he did while promoting Sonic the Hedgehog 2 in 2022, he also said that he was retiring from acting.

Or at least probably retiring. He said that he was “fairly serious” about retiring, but if some script came along that was delivered to him by angels and written in gold ink, something that he read and thought it was so important that the world needed to see it, in that case he might continue with his career. And that movie was Sonic the Hedgehog 3.

Still, Carrey is largely retired, and it’s unclear if he’s going to continue making movies. So why would the government need to kill him? They had to assassinate a retired actor and replace him with a body double so that the double could…hold on, let me check my notes…attend an awards ceremony? What the fuck is even the point of that?

Either just kill him and make it look like he did it himself, or replace him and have the body double say a bunch of pro-Trump stuff. Why replace him just to accept an award and then recede back out of the public spotlight?

Obviously none of this makes sense, and most people were able to acknowledge that fairly early on. But then a wrinkle in the story appeared to bring the theory a second chance at life.

The Confession

I’m going to go out on a limb here, Simon, but I’m assuming you’ve never heard of Alexis Stone. That’s okay, I never had either before this whole Jim Carrey conspiracy. Alexis is the stage name of British drag queen and makeup artist Elliot Rentz, and I guess he’s pretty well known among people who follow either celebrity gossip or the drag scene.

Alexis is most famous for his celebrity transformations, using a combination of makeup and prosthetics to impersonate tons of different celebrities from Lana Del Rey to Meryl Streep to Shrek. How good the transformations are vary wildly from celebrity to celebrity, but some of them are truly remarkable. I mean, the prosthetics are impressive, though I can’t believe Shrek would ever really wear a t-shirt that said “Big dick is back in town” on it.

Anyway, a couple days after this conspiracy had taken the internet by storm, Alexis posted pictures of Carrey at the Cesar awards with the caption “Alexis Stone as Jim Carrey in Paris”. In addition to two media photos of Carrey, Alexis also uploaded this third photo of the prosthetics he allegedly used for the transformation.

This immediately threw a lot of fuel on the fire, particularly for those who lack critical thinking skills or who have never heard of generative AI. Because this image is fake as fuck, and I really hope I don’t need to explain that to you. But in case there’s anyone in the audience who doesn’t understand, allow me to explain.

Personally I don’t even think that mask looks like Carrey did in Paris, nor do I think the wig pictured behind it matches Carrey’s hair. But for the sake of argument, let’s just say that they do. The first question I want to ask is how the fuck that prosthetic mask is standing up. The entire point of such a mask would be for it to be thin and flexible, like skin. If the mask was so rigid that it could stand up on its own like that, it would be inflexible and unbelievable as a disguise.

And no, the mask isn’t being held up by anything. You could put it over one of those mannequin heads like the wig is on (which would be required for it to keep the perfect head shape that it has instead of flopping around everywhere), but if that were happening then you wouldn’t be able to see darkness through the eyes and mouth; you’d see whatever the mask was resting on.

Also, what the fuck is up with those teeth? Since when do fake teeth come with an extra foot and a half of gum attached to them, especially when it’s a prosthetic meant to go over a person’s already existing teeth. There’s no way that thing is fitting in anybody’s mouth, which, coincidentally, is what she said.

Those are the glaring issues that make it clear this is AI, but then there are the little things. There is the uncanny quality of everything, the weirdly perfect studio lighting, and the fact that the Eiffel Tower happens to be perfectly in frame outside the window.

I don’t know much about Alexis, but my understanding is that being a massive troll is a major part of his brand. He was clearly just using this conspiracy as a way to troll the internet while simultaneously getting himself a bit of free publicity. And it certainly worked, because now we both know who he is.

The Boring But Obvious Truth

I understand that it can be fun to wildly speculate about things on the internet, but I think it’s pretty obvious what happened here. Based on how puffy, plastic looking, and suspiciously devoid of wrinkles Carrey’s face was, it seems clear that he got some shitty Botox. That’s the whole story.

People point out that Carrey said during his red carpet interview “I’m dead”, “I made mistakes”, and “everything I said was true”, but those are all out of context. He said “I’m dead” when describing how he felt hearing everyone else speaking in fluent French, knowing how much he was going to struggle with his speech. He then said that he made mistakes during his speech, but that everything he said in his speech was true.

It’s all really straight forward if you watch the whole clip, but people took those phrases out of context to suggest that not only had Carrey been killed and replaced, but that his doppelganger was now dropping hints about what had happened. Even if we tried to take the conspiracy theorists seriously, it doesn’t even remotely make sense that the body double Jim Carrey would allude to the things the real Carrey had said being true. Otherwise, the government could just kill him and replace him with a newer body double.

At the end of the interview Carrey was asked about having worn so many different faces in his career and what his favourite funny face was, to which he answered, “my favourite funny face is the one I’m wearing now”. This has also been used to suggest that he was an imposter wearing a mask, but this sort of answer was a recurring theme in interviews he’s given over the past ten years or so.

Carrey has talked a lot about how even the “real” version of himself was sort of a fictional character, and one that he didn’t even have total control over because of narratives spun by the media and public opinion. His answer on the red carpet was the sort of answer you would get from someone with a decent amount of internalized issues about their own identity, the sort of issues he had previously described experiencing. Alternatively, since it seems like the reporter may have been trying to prompt him to make a funny face, the answer he gave could also serve as a more polite way of saying “I’m 64 years old and not in the mood to dance like a monkey for you right now”.

Speaking of him being 64, that’s relevant to his voice as well. The most notable change to a person’s voice is during puberty, but your voice continues to change as your vocal chords experience a lifetime of wear and tear. It’s totally normal that Carrey wouldn’t sound the same as he did 30 years ago.

It’s also totally normal that his personality would change a bit as well. He’s getting old and is mostly retired, so there’s no reason for him to be zany and off the wall all the time. Plus, as I alluded to earlier, what the public perceived as being the “real” Carrey wasn’t the same as what he perceived it to be. You may think his personality was dramatically different, but maybe he’s just done putting on a show and acting the way you think he’s supposed to.

Then there’s the matter of the eyes, the smoking gun that really threw people for a loop. To start, aging can cause eye colour to lighten a bit in white people, though this isn’t particularly common. What most likely happened is that people didn’t actually know what colour Carrey’s eyes were in the first place.

People kept insisting that Carrey’s eyes are brown, but they’re actually hazel, which is a mixture of brown and green. A lot of the time it’s hard to distinguish between brown and hazel eyes, but in bright, natural light, hazel eyes can take on a very light green appearance. And wouldn’t you know it? The interview where Carrey’s eyes appeared much lighter than normal happened to be taking place outside in natural light.

During his speech when he was indoors, his eyes looked the same brown colour that people were used to seeing.

Also, there are plenty of pictures of Carrey’s eyes looking really light, going all the way back to the 1980s. Those are obviously the minority of photos, because that’s how hazel eyes work, but you don’t have to work that hard to find younger pictures of Carrey with lighter looking eyes.

For a lot of people, though, the obvious answer is hard to believe. Carrey spent a lot of time speaking out against Hollywood norms like plastic surgery, so the idea that he would have shown up at an awards ceremony with a botched Botox job seemed unconscionable. But believe it or not, sometimes people change their minds.

Granted this isn’t the sort of thing I would expect someone to change their mind about. It’s hard to imagine getting older and randomly deciding, “You know what? All of this insane, superficial bullshit is actually a really good thing and I was wrong for opposing it.”

But at the same time, Carrey had a rough few years there in the 2010s. He spend six years in deep depression after his girlfriend died of a drug overdose. It didn’t help matters that his girlfriend’s husband then sued Carrey for wrongful death, essentially accusing him of murder. He seems to have come out of that depression finally and says that he is happy, but he also has a 32 year old girlfriend now.

Maybe he wanted to look younger for her, or maybe he wanted to look his best while receiving such a prestigious award. I’m not in his head so I can’t say for sure, but it’s hardly inconceivable that he would have decided to get Botox as a one off thing for this special event.

A representative for Jim Carrey has said that he was in fact the one in Paris for the awards, as did the general delegate for the Cesar Awards, Gregory Caulier. According to Caulier, Carrey spent months practicing his speech in French, and Caulier helped him with the pronunciation of certain words. He went on to describe the entire conspiracy theory as a “non-issue”, which is 100% correct.

I know the truth is always more boring than the conspiracy theories, but this was a stupid theory anyway. When I first researched this I thought it was actually a fake conspiracy that was being spread as a meme, but there are a shitload of people who genuinely believe that Carrey has been replaced. Which is sad and disappointing for the future of humanity.

Besides, this sort of thing happens all the time. Celebrities get shitty Botox and plastic surgery on a regular basis, and the others don’t get accused of being clones because of it. In fact, to drive home that point, I’m going to end this by showing you a picture from 2022. This screenshot is from a video that was posted to the internet by the BBC four years ago while promoting the upcoming season of Britain’s Got Talent, and the BBC then removed it from the internet for giving people nightmares.

You probably don’t even remember what I’m talking about, either, because this stuff is so common that it’s largely forgettable. Not that there’s anything forgettable about the image I’m about to show you. Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you: Simon Cowell.
